We the ladies of Essence are calling this year, the Year of the Woman. In June, we’re throwing a show called EMPOWER to celebrate this. As we continue to grow into adulthood, we learn more and more things about the way the world works… especially in the world of our careers as female entertainers. Women are objectified and regarded as inferior, because collectively, women allow it. It’s important that women understand exactly how much power we have and how much power is kept FROM us. Change needs to happen, but it’ll only happen if we first equip ourselves with the knowledge and understanding of our position. We need to actively educate ourselves, always.
I have yet to see the actual MissRepresentation film, but the trailer above is enough to strike me. Some of the Essence ladies have already seen this. I believe there’ll be more screenings of this film in the near future. Check out www.missrepresentation.org
